Sweet, hint of spice, and dominant fruit notes of grape and orange. This coffee has a tea like body with bright, delicious notes that make it a cup that is worth savoring and enjoying slowly. This coffee has complexities that take time to appreciate, every cup has us just smiling and we are so glad to work with a local based importer that has a heart for the world, just like we do, this is our first coffee of many from Kula coffee.

Origin and Ownership

  • Location: Ntango Coffee Washing Station
    Nyamasheke District, Western Province, Rwanda
  • Altitude: 1500 meters
  • Ownership: Operated by Kula since mid-2019. The station was purchased and renovated by Kula, resuming operations after a period of inactivity.

Coffee Profile

  • Processing Method: Fully Washed
  • Varieties: Jackson, Bourbon Mayaguez
  • Producers: Coffee cherries sourced from approximately 800 smallholding farmers in the nearby area, each typically owning around 400 trees.

Quality and Sustainability

  • Quality Assurance: Extensive sorting processes including floating, channel sorting, and hand sorting. Day lots are cupped throughout the season to identify the highest quality batches, which are then combined to create the Nziza Cyane microlot.
  • Sustainability Efforts: Farmers receive competitive market prices, exceeding government-set minimums, and a bonus payment at year-end. Involvement in the Kula Fellowship program offers training in farm management and business development, aiming to significantly increase income and harvest yields for participating farmers.

Community and Culture

  • Local Connection: Situated on the shores of Lake Kivu, the washing station is a central part of the local coffee farming community, regulated into specific zones as per government policy.
  • Farmer Engagement: Active engagement with the farmers through the Kula Fellowship program, emphasizing growth in both agricultural and business aspects.

Flavor Profile

  • Tasting Notes: Grape, Orange Blossom, Clove
  • Best Brewing Methods: High-ratio filter brew methods (pour over & drip)
